Barack Obama speaks about our addiction (to oil) on ’60 Minutes’

November 17th, 2008

In case you missed the ’60 Minutes’ special of the Obamas interview that aired on November 16th, you can view and read it here.

President-elect Barack Obama made a very poignant comment about our never ending addiction to oil:

(CBS) Kroft: When the price of oil was at $147 a barrel, there were a lot of spirited and profitable discussions that were held on energy independence. Now you’ve got the price of oil under $60.

Mr. Obama: Right.

Kroft: Does doing something about energy is it less important now than…

Mr. Obama: It’s more important. It may be a little harder politically, but it’s more important.

Kroft: Why?

Mr. Obama: Well, because this has been our pattern. We go from shock to trance. You know, oil prices go up, gas prices at the pump go up, everybody goes into a flurry of activity. And then the prices go back down and suddenly we act like it’s not important, and we start, you know filling up our SUVs again.

And, as a consequence, we never make any progress. It’s part of the addiction, all right. That has to be broken. Now is the time to break it.

I think that is a response worth repeating until we take action and do something about it.

Exactly! You know, lower oil prices do NOT mean buy all the bottled water you can find and fill up the milk jugs with unleaded. Not only will the cycle continue, but it will be WORSE when it bounces back.

And unless we take action NOW, it will. Need to get off that oil!

  8. It is SO important to look into other sources of energy. I don’t own a car so buying gas for my car wasn’t affecting me in that way. But most of our food is shipped via truck, which is one of the reasons it is so expensive. And a lot of people, especially in the Northeast, have homes that heated with oil. I was very concerned that people were not going to be able to afford heat.

@Kim – I too was concerned about the people in the Northeast; which is one reason why I’m glad the price of oil is down, but we definitely need to rapidly find alternatives – ASAP.

  10. Loved the interview, the truth he spoke and the authenticity that dripped form Obama and his wife. We’ve made a fine choice and I’m betting that together we get out of this mess in his first four years.

Brazil is 100% energy independent because they learned their lesson in the 70′s. I hope the US really starts taking steps to go green and to lessen their dependence on Middle Eastern oil.

  12. “nd then the prices go back down and suddenly we act like it’s not important, and we start, you know filling up our SUVs again.” SO SO true.

  13. Yes! NOW is the time to do something about it, when we aren’t panicky about the price. In other words, perhaps we will think more clearly and congress won’t shove in some hasty half-assed plan, but rather a well-thought out plan.
