Halloween Safety

October 29th, 2008

Though we’ve heard about “Halloween safety” year after year for as long as some of us can remember, its always good to be reminded; especially when it comes to children.

Here are some great tips and ideas from Source News Papers to keep your Halloween happy, healthy and safe.

Halloween tips and tricks

The only one I DON’T agree with is:

“When purchasing costumes and accessories, look for “Flame Resistant” labels.”  Here is a  previous post on the matter:  Fire retardant chemicals found in toddlers’ blood

One way to reduce the risk of fires is to avoid candles all together.

If you must light up:

-Keep candles out of reach and walking space of children and avoid putting them in places where they can be knocked around  (small tables, etc).

-Make sure there is always adult supervision.

-Trim wicks prior to each use to within ¼-inch from the top of the candle.

-Keep a non-expired fire extinguisher near.

  1. Thank you Carla. Timely, and helpful. My kids are all set with their non-flame-resistant costumes.

  2. Great reminder about the flame retardants, scary stuff. I love Halloween but I always worry about this holiday. The fires, the dark, poison candy, etc. Maybe it’s the spookiness of the holiday?

Clicking on the Green Guide they hit my first idea right off. Light-colored clothing for visibility.

And the flame-retardant scare is a first to me. I’m assuming that applies for pyjamas too and must check into it.

Oh and for parental sanity – make sure kids eat a good protein dinner before munching all that candy!

have a green one (saw your comment on Vered.)

  5. Light colored clothing is a really good idea. One of my daughter’s friends went as a ninja and the next day at soccer the parents said they kept “losing” him even though he was standing right in front of them.

We try to use clothes that we already have or make costumes from thrift store clothes.
